LITERARY LEPERS: “APOLOGY OF GENIUS”

In creating his box of Loy, Cornell uses a line from “Apology of Genius,” a poem Loy first published in the “Poems 1921–1922” section of the 1923 Lunar Baedecker. The poem reads like a delicate artist’s manifesto, a proud declaration of departure from social expectations. The title is a play on “apologia,” or defense. Yet in this case, the main defense for the genius is the mere fact that she or he is beyond the realm of apology. Rather than excuse or defend the artist’s difference, the poem instead reaffirms kinship with a remote band of intellectual outlaws who are not only misunderstood, but also have no interest in trying to make themselves understood.
